Keeping Children Safe With Online TV

-->

There are many perks that come from watching online TV, but there are some downsides as well. Children who have free reign of the Internet are finding it easier than ever to view the shows their parents wouldn’t normally let them watch.

If you think about it, it’s easy to see how this happens. Many networks and websites make content from the TV available to anyone who visits their site. There is little way to figure out how old the person is, even if they ask for your age by ‘the honor system. So, what are you supposed to do as the parent to make sure your little one doesn’t get into some off-limits TV?

The first thing you need to do is set some firm rules with your child. Sometimes children watch things because they haven’t been explicitly told they cannot. While you might assume they know the rules, you really need to spell it out for them. Let them know that just because Jimmy from school gets to watch something doesn’t mean they can.

The next thing you need to do is allow them some freedoms, depending on their age. If you have a real little one they will likely obey you, and you should be very carefully monitoring where they are on the Internet for safety reasons anyway. If they are older (teenage years) you will probably be met with some resistance.

Often, nothing is worse than babying this set of little ones. If you hold them tight and monitor their every step you might get a little rebel on your hands. Showing that you trust and respect them them will probably get you a lot further. With that being said, there is nothing wrong with letting them know that you can easily check the history of where they’ve been online if it should come to that.

Online TV is wonderful, but it’s incredibly important to protect your children from watching the online content that might contain objectionable material.
