Paid Cable TV On It’s Way Out?

-->

With the proliferation of online television and options to watch movies and shows becoming increasingly available, there are many people who are no longer seeing the sense in paying good, hard-earned money for paid TV subscriptions, especially as cable TV tends to be so high now and we are all feeling a crunch economically.

Many users are now switching to watching their favorite shows on line, as almost all the major channels now offer the option. ABC.com, FOX.com, CW.com, and NBC.com all have links to watch the most recent episodes of their most popular television shows directly from their Websites.

So the general consensus is why pay for cable if I can watch it on line?

There is a slight drawback though, however one that will soon no longer even be an issue if popularity keeps rising. That is the fact that you have to actually watch the TV show on your computer.

Now however, more and more technology is being created, so that soon it will be nothing to watch your show online straight from your television. Another drawback is that shows are generally not available until the day after broadcasting on cable, so you can’t watch it right away.

But interestingly enough, that seems to be part of the appeal of online television as well, where users aren’t constrained to watching television at set times just so they don’t miss their favorite show. They can watch it on demand, whenever the fancy strikes. Sounds a bit like TiVo, doesn’t it?

The number of TV viewers cutting the cord and downgrading their pay for TV packages is a relatively small percentage at the moment. However, it is expected to increase over time, and while online TV may never make the full leap to regular programming like paid television, there are still many users out there who are perfectly happy to watch their shows online and save themselves the monthly fees.
